Insert a Static Date
A static value in an Excel worksheet is one that doesnt change when a formula or worksheet is recalculated or opened.

  1. On a worksheet, select the cell into which you want to insert the current date.
  2. To insert the current date, press Ctrl+; (semi-colon).

Bonus! Need to insert the current time and keep it static? Press Ctrl+Shift+; (semi-colon). Want them both? Static date AND time? Press Ctrl+; (semi-colon), then press Space, and then press Ctrl+Shift+; (semi-colon).

Insert a Dynamic Date
Sometimes you may want to insert a date or time whose value is updated automatically. You will use a formula  theTODAYandNOWfunctions  to return a dynamic date or time.

  1. On a worksheet, select the cell into which you want to insert the current date.
  2. To insert todays date as a dynamic date, enter the following into an empty cell and tap Enter:
    =TODAY()

To insert the current time as a dynamic field, enter the following into an empty cell and tap Enter:
=NOW()
